Islands have been around for centuries serving multiple purposes. They've been chopping blocks, layout tables, bars, moveable workstations, and as many uses as individuals could come up with. Their heights have ranged from 30" (table height) to 36" (kitchen countertop height) to 42" (bar height). Their aesthetic often compliments the rest of the kitchen and has recently become a contrasting element to the overall kitchen appearance. The materials are often different, both in vertical and horizontal countertop materials. In some cases antiques have been used as a visual focal point
Here's some examples of kitchen islands from projects we've designed.
